Career opportunities

Illustration is predominantly a freelance activity, but the fresh,
progressive thinking and the exploitation of diverse image making that
we encourage can be applied to a diverse variety of career options.

The primary route of an MA Illustration graduate would be to
freelance in the following areas: Editorial Illustration, Children’s
Picture Books, Reportage Illustration, Sequential Narrative (such as
graphic novels, comics, story boards for film), picture editing, and
art editorial.

Professional illustrators are in increasing demand as the media
industry expands, and are sought across the range of multimedia
disciplines, in print media, books, advertising, television and
online.

Career paths also include:

  • graphic design,
  • advertising,
  • publishing,
  • animation,
  • studio management and art direction,
  • television and design group practice.

Successful completion of the course would also allow for progression
on to further study including MPhil and PhD.
