Electronic technologies are now being applied to biomolecular and biomedical research and the electronics industry is moving towards healthcare applications. Learn how modern micro- and nanofabrication methods can be used to create biodevices and position yourself at this exciting new interface between electronic engineering and the life sciences.
This programme is multidisciplinary, exploring the functional integration of nanofabricated structures and biological molecules into microscale biodevices and systems. State-of-the-art nanofabrication and electronic or optical measurement methods are addressed, and the specific design requirements for device operation in the aqueous environment of biomolecular solutions such as blood samples are emphasized. The programme will also impart a thorough appreciation of biochemical and biophysical methodology, which is essential for the development of biodevices. You will develop skills outside a conventional engineering curricula. A significant component of the programme is in laboratories, involving research and cleanroom equipment, and close interaction with researchers working at the cutting edge of this interface with the Life Sciences.
Research and investment in this area is driven by engineering, life sciences, and medical sciences and we will provide a close interface with these areas. The degree provides an excellent platform for further research in either industry or academia (such as PhD research in ECS, the ORC and the Institute for Life Sciences).
The programme consists of eight taught modules and an individual research project. The core subjects relate to bionanotechnology and design and fabrication of biodevices. You can also choose from a wide range of optional topics. These include modules on nanoelectronics, microelectromechanical systems and photonics and also biomolecular courses taught by the Centre for Biological Sciences, allowing you to tailor the structure to suit your own interests.
